Why cannot I be pessimistic? And so, what can I do?
Through this school term, I put myself in a situation of "think over everything again from the beginning". It was certainly a tough thing to do. I was so depressed sometimes.
The courses I took in this semester was
- Environmental Ethics
- Environmental Problem Solving part 1
- Intermediate Mandarin (chinese)
- Intermediate Micro Economics
- Introduction to Ecology
.
I am not really sure if I learned a lot of new "materials", but I learned so many "ideas","facts", and "contradictions" by taking these courses.
I know majority of people in general do not really care about "environmental" something, since the word is used so much that people are tired of hearing it, and also we really do not feel any huge differences or destruction of surrounding environment through daily life, if we live in specific urban area of developed countries and have enough money to make living for ourselves.
However, I am sure about this now.
The more you know about the facts of what is happening now around the world, the more you become pessimistic about our future. So do I.
Majority of people do not care about other species or resources unless they suffer damages from them.
And I, am having hard time of what I can do and I should do to change those majorities' way of thinking toward others,
other 1 billion of people who have no access to safe water,
other species which are going to extinct and will never be seen around anywhere on this planet.
Why did we become so selfish? In my opinion, it is quite normal behavior to help others if they are in need of someone's help.
And they do not realize they will suffer from all this. It is not far future that we will have to live without fossil fuels. It is not far future that we have to fight for water resources if we keep polluting and wasting them. \
If you don't like the term "global warming" or "CO2", that's totally fine. I know you think global warming is just a wordplay or something. But you should know that you are one of 6 billions human species on this planet, and you imagine others are doing same things as you do everyday? Then do you think the Earth has capacity for that?
Currently, so many choices we want to make "for less-damage to the environment" need money. This means that we have to wait until we get more money so that we CAN AFFORD to make change.
So now I am pessimistic about where humans are heading.
If they see the facts, will they change their mind? Or still greedy for their "own happiness" or " technology convenience", whatever they are?
I will not give up. I will change myself first.
